POLITICS SONNETS

MILIBAND

In a classroom, enrolled for a day course.

Adult Education Institution,

I heard new Marxism from a great source.

Ralph Miliband blew away illusions.

The limits of late capitalism,

creates a smaller, global ruling class.

Virtues he expounds in Socialism,

benefit all when supported by us.

In the thick of hot  theoretical

debate, he and the French philosophers,

Poulanzas, Althusser. Political

power through agency or structures first?

What individuals do matters, he meant.

Not engaged to effect, disappointment.

JOE HILL.

I dreamt I met the spirit of Joe Hill

“I never died” said he, “I never died”.

Come to inspire me; to strengthen my will.

“Those tormentors of me” said he, “they lied”.

Said Joe’s spirit “Go on to organize.”

“Because you know” said he, “I never died”.

Their gruesome tactic is to terrorise.

“But they cannot defeat yours, or my, pride”.

I swear I saw Joe Hill, still in his prime.

Said Joe to me “Our spirits will survive”.

We resist, and resist, them; then in time

we return, and show we are still alive.

“Thanks Joe” I said, “for being by my side”.

“I never died” said he, “I never died”.

SLAVERY

So many uprooted by slavery.

Stolen away from Mother Africa.

Tormented by the white mans’ larceny.

Sold for work, after forced to travel far.

Did not receive, for their labour, fair pay.

Just herded and fed as if animals.

And the ill left to die along the way.

The weak and disliked, too. Few miracles.

Then the arduous, murderous working,

with punishments so brutal and unjust.

Scars inflicted, often for life, hurting.

And lynchings, to bring fear in the disgust.

Women raped. Lives broke. Names gone. Misery.

To survive all of that took bravery.

THE POPE’S PAST.

Disagreement about the Pope’s action

when, in Argentina, senior Priest.

Work with the poor claimed with satisfaction.

Alms, and spiritual aid, through him, increased.

No dispute as a generality,

until it’s claimed he told those favela

folk, that for their spirituality’

‘rid Devil from your lives, must endeavour’.

That certainly annoyed me a great deal,

as the context in which he argued this

was, where stolen children were unrevealed,

the missing, the murders, the brutal fist.

To rout out Evil there was a strong case.

He looked for the Devil in the wrong place.

PUSSY RIOT.

A revelation in riotousness

Punk prayer in the Russian Orthodox Church.

Reveling in defying piousness.

Irreverent song to make a priest burst.

Bold show by the three young, bolshie, women.

Anarchic, in their way, by the altar.

Subjecting ritual to revision.

Dance distortion by each lively daughter.

So, of course, they are branded hooligans.

Charged and convicted, ‘criminal offence.

Prison to punish their ebullience.

Unforgiving, church, state, to irritants.

Their act was not a cause for disquiet.

Wrong, crucifixion of Pussy Riot.

RELIGIONS.

I find them so primitive, Religions.

Not that values espoused are not worthy.

This core belief deserves my derision.

“Heaven or Hell as end of the journey”.

Fundamentalism is pathetic.

Missionaries take up ‘flat’ position.

‘Flat Earth’ that is, about which emphatic.

Bad faiths’ inevitable collision.

And they’re dictatorships of the righteous.

In the right. Good. All else deemed as evil.

It is an attitude that’s obnoxious.

Abuse of power, those priests do reveal.

A lot secular is not much better.

But, at least, not pretend ‘live forever’.

THE WELLBEING OF CHILDREN.

River blindness. Bacteria effect.

Unsighted by the water pollution.

Children are affected. Should not accept.

Their safety should be in constitution.

The rise of malformities in new born.

Attributed to weapons used in war.

Depleted Uranium, then, deforms

Child lives’ damaged, is what force has in store.

On top of this, the ongoing hunger.

Deprivation and poverty extreme.

Young ones’ development put asunder.

Broken and bent bodies and bones, it means.

Even aspiration has detractors.

Young’s fate down to political factors.

FALLUJAH WAR CRIMES.

The assaults on Fallujah were war crimes.

Repeated attacks on civilians.

Women and children’s lives not worth a dime.

Spending the ‘reconstruction’ millions.

People killed in mosque, school and their own home.

Earlier protest was met with bullets.

Now with automatic machine guns roamed.

Marines murdering. All their chiefs knew it.

Snipers strafed streets at anything that moved.

All ambulances had bullet holes in.

Murders, by the highest levels approved.

Stopping those from the city escaping,

the British troops. Crime collaborators.

Aided ‘resident exterminators’.

LOVE AND HUMANITY.

Imagine book “Love and Humanity”.

A world history as we should know it.

Human kind, not human insanity.

The closest to heaven here below it.

Content to make connections of respect,

mutual regard and equality.

Help for each other as one would expect.

Efforts could eliminate poverty.

War would no longer be perpetual.

Greed not be systemized or encouraged.

A better world more than conceptual.

Those who promote this, praised for their courage.

Individuals less lonely, and cared for.

And for lovers, babies. All our hearts soar.

AN ANARCHIST CRITIQUE.

A polemic with some passion contained.

Being persuasive not the intention.

The argument, however flawed, explained.

For particular action; contention.

There is a significant difference

from what is genuine belief in fairness,

which cuts through, otherwise, indifference,

and those promoting vested interest.

We’re supposed to accept democracy.

Boiled down to merely the chance to elect.

Burdened by centralized autocracy

with most people excluded, if inspect.

A link to freedom falsely inferring.

The powerful preserve their self-serving.

STATE VIOLENCE.

People use force to assent their will. Steal.

As a response, violence by the State.

Maintaining Order claimed to be the deal.

But Authority’s power to dictate.

This is its main institutional role.

Thwart wrongs of, by violence to its folk.

Except those who, the State itself, have stole.

Second role; foreign, trade or war promote.

The third task, Welfare, now so reluctant

to pay. Return to intimidation.

From cuts to privatizing, money spent.

Life made harder their real inclination.

Disproportionately, the old and poor,

and others, fall foul of State force majeure.

ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL ACT.

Three economic and political

powers. Individuals, Corporations

and the State. Roles in shaping, critical,

in setting each others limitations.

People in combination gather weight.

Trade Union or campaigning movements

with actions and demands they clearly make,

wielding considerable influence.

But forced to show their determination,

to achieve concessions or compromise.

Reduce negative implementation.

Win what’s more favourable to arise.

From neutered unions no protests spring,

so ‘the need for greed’ increases its sting.

“I HAVE A DREAM” 50 YEARS ON. (28.8.13)

The embodiment of equality

in a unique, very singular, way.

For jobs, fair pay and ending poverty,

they marched … King spoke … 50 years to the day.

That’s not happened. Injustice still rages.

Violent crime victims, dealing in drugs.

Locked up in prisons, many, for ages.

High glass ceilings still, and low, pulled up rugs.

The 60s Dream is incompatible

with late ferocious capitalism.

Global race hatred remains to appall.

American Dream’s unrealism.

Audacity of Hope, then, came and went.

Little change, bar a U.S. President.

G8 (2013) SONNET.

Recognised for what it is – rhetoric.

In this case as a bland anaesthetic.

To not accept it is deemed heretic.

What it hides, worse, but process pathetic.

Speak at the venue, but action little.

Inconsequential, on the cause espoused.

If judged on professed aims, waste of spittle.

If real purpose known, then anger aroused.

“Peace, Justice, Hope” mouthed, when supply the means

for war, and its murder of civilians.

“Tackling tax evasion” not as it seems

when havens so rich don’t pay billions.

No Tobin Tax as subject for debate.

Speculation unchecked at the G8.

WEAK PROTEST.

In some countries, people out on the street.

Egypt, Bahrain, Greece, Portugal and Spain,

where hear the loud patter of protest feet.

Those brave folk come out again and again.

Britain – not docile or apathetic.

We’re just demoralized by false notions.

“Not good but they do their best’. Pathetic!

The Press? May as well drown in the ocean.

Solidarity? more likely to snipe!

And trades unions too weak to push on.

But in the land of “gun murder” bold type,

calls for this source of child deaths to be gone

get, outside The White House, just a thousand.

They’re told ‘too early to talk of guns banned’.

THE SERVILE STATE.

How to reconsider the Servile State?

In thrall to small groups of backroom fixers.

Change forced as power flux necessitates.

But then a new set of tight knit tricksters.

Alongside longer term institutions –

people, like judges and the monarchy –

some nominal democratic fusion

assures allegiance to oligarchy.

Army chiefs strut with government lackeys.

Corporate bankers and greedy bosses

exploit this system to do as they please.

State run for these ‘haves’ We take the losses.

We people thus made servile to the State.

Yearning for it to work for us, we wait.

THE PARTY.

Democracy is contained and bottled.

Choices and elections rendered shallow.

Challenge to the current order, throttled.

Just the mildest disagreement allow.

The Party, there as a tribal device.

Past principles signaled aspiration.

Now central control is the way to rise.

No radical change, mere imitation.

Parliament’s voice effectively neutered.

M.P.s can talk but to no great effect.

While our country’s wealth is being looted,

Restraint on this, the usurpers reject.

Those who squeeze through the top of the Party

Are sworn supporters of oligarchy.

TAX ROBBERY PROCEEDS RECYCLED.

The funding is a means of corruption.

Financial favours facilitated.

Mutual gain without interruption.

Privately, the money liberated.

Bankers invest huge sums to operate

schemes meant to profit from poor people’s debt.

Accorded privileges of the State,

their gambles treated as if a safe bet.

New tricks aplenty to avoid high tax.

Paying at a lesser rate than workers.

Then the seemingly unrelated pacts

where Political Clout funded at core.

Generous donations to party chiefs.

Thievery, granted veneer of ‘beliefs’.
