"politics is life through a lens"

A polemic with some passion contained.

Being persuasive not the intention.

The argument, however flawed, explained.

For particular action; contention.

There is a significant difference

from what is genuine belief in fairness,

which cuts through, otherwise, indifference,

and those promoting vested interest.

We’re supposed to accept democracy.

Boiled down to merely the chance to elect.

Burdened by centralized autocracy

with most people excluded, if inspect.

A link to freedom falsely inferring.

The powerful preserve their self-serving.

People use force to assert their will. Steal.

As a response, violence by the State.

Maintaining Order claimed to be the deal.

But Authority’s power to dictate.

This is its main institutional role.

Thwart wrongs of, by violence to its folk.

Except those who, the State itself, have stole.

Second role; foreign, trade or war promote.

The third task, Welfare, now so reluctant

to pay. Return to intimidation.

From cuts to privatizing, money spent.

Life made harder their real inclination.

Disproportionately, the old and poor,

and others, fall foul of State force majeure.

Three economic and political

powers. Individuals, Corporations

and the State. Roles in shaping, critical,

in setting each others limitations.

People in combination gather weight.

Trade Union or campaigning movements

with actions and demands they clearly make,

wielding considerable influence.

But forced to show their determination,

to achieve concessions or compromise.

Reduce negative implementation.

Win what’s more favourable to arise.

From neutered unions no protests spring,

so ‘the need for greed’ increases its sting.

“I HAVE A DREAM” 50 YEARS ON.   (28.8.13)

The embodiment of equality

in a unique, very singular, way.

For jobs, fair pay and ending poverty,

they marched … King spoke … 50 years to the day.

That’s not happened. Injustice still rages.

Violent crime victims, dealing in drugs.

Locked up in prisons, many, for ages.

High glass ceilings still, and low, pulled up rugs.

The 60s Dream is incompatible

with late ferocious capitalism.

Global race hatred remains to appall.

American Dream’s unrealism.

Audacity of Hope, then, came and went.

Little change, bar a U.S. President.

G8 (2013) SONNET.

Recognised for what it is – rhetoric.

In this case as a bland anaesthetic.

To not accept it is deemed heretic.

What it hides, worse, but process pathetic.

Speak at the venue, but action little.

Inconsequential, on the cause espoused.

If judged on professed aims, waste of spittle.

If real purpose known, then anger aroused.

“Peace, Justice, Hope” mouthed, when supply the means

for war, and its murder of civilians.

“Tackling tax evasion” not as it seems

when havens so rich don’t pay billions.

No Tobin Tax as subject for debate.

Speculation unchecked at the G8.

In some countries, people out on the street.

Egypt, Bahrain, Greece, Portugal and Spain,

where hear the loud patter of protest feet.

Those brave folk come out again and again.

Britain – not docile or apathetic.

We’re just demoralized by false notions.

“Not good but they do their best’. Pathetic!

The Press? May as well drown in the ocean.

Solidarity? more likely to snipe!

And trades unions too weak to push on.

But in the land of “gun murder” bold type,

calls for this source of child deaths to  be gone

get, outside The White House, just a thousand.

They’re told ‘too early to talk of guns banned’.

How to reconsider the Servile State?

In thrall to small groups of backroom fixers.

Change forced as power flux necessitates.

But then a new set of tight knit tricksters.

Alongside longer term institutions -

people, like judges and the monarchy -

some nominal democratic fusion

assures allegiance to oligarchy.

Army chiefs strut with government lackeys.

Corporate bankers and greedy bosses

exploit this system to do as they please.

State run for these ‘haves’. We take the losses.

We people thus made servile to the State.

Yearning for it to work for us, we wait.

Democracy is contained and bottled.

Choices and elections rendered shallow.

Challenge to the current order, throttled.

Just the mildest disagreement allow.

The Party, there as a tribal device.

Past principles signaled aspiration.

Now central control is the way to rise.

No radical change, mere imitation.

Parliament’s voice effectively neutered.

M.P.s can talk but to no great effect.

While our country’s wealth is being looted,

Restraint on this, the usurpers reject.

Those who squeeze through the top of the Party

Are sworn supporters of oligarchy.

The funding is a means of corruption.

Financial favours facilitated.

Mutual gain without interruption.

Privately, the money liberated.

Bankers invest huge sums to operate

schemes meant to profit from poor people’s debt.

Accorded privileges of the State,

their gambles treated as if a safe bet.

New tricks aplenty to avoid high tax.

Paying at a lesser rate than workers.

Then the seemingly unrelated pacts

where Political Clout funded at core.

Generous donations to party chiefs.

Thievery, granted veneer of ‘beliefs’.
